Sustainable Urban Hygiene in Rural Areas of Tanzania
The name of the NGO SUHRA-Tanzania is not only an acronym but also a word in Swahili. It means Face. And that is exactly the idea of the SUHRA-Tanzania team.
Particularly the situation in the rural areas of Tanzania has a lack of initiatives and economic opportunities to improve basic needs, because their relevance often has a minor role in the decision-making process when it comes to the allocation of (inter-)national Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects. We want to change this situation by forming together a charismatic face with high impact – hand in hand with the inhabitants, to create a strong visibility.
The NGO SUHRA-Tanzania was founded in the year 2022 and is therefore a young non-profit association. The vision statement of SUHRA-Tanzania is healthy communities in harmony with the environment.
For the realisation the NGO has the mission to connect rural communities that have urban hygiene challenges with potential solution providers to build up community operated sustainable infrastructure.
Backround
For more than 15 years, the University of Applied Science, Luebeck, and Tanzanian project partners have continuously carried out joint projects to improve the basic needs. Over the years, it emerged in a strong team of Tanzanian and German participants. The Tanzanian NGO SUHRA-Tanzania and the German non-profit association SUHRA-Tansania e. V. were founded to maintain this union and to coordinate beyond individual projects.
The team is working already for several years together and were therefore able to build up a large network while carrying out continuously several projects successfully with partners. Most of them have taken place in the WASH-sector.
Even though these projects were not technically implemented by the NGO SUHRA-Tanzania, they are listed on the website, because most of the members were involved.
