The joint implementation of projects in the WASH sector requires the involvement of the Tanzanian non-profit NGO SUHRA-Tanzania and a German non-profit association (SUHRA Tansania e. V.). The members of those associations are listed separately below.
Tanzanian Members of SUHRA-Tanzania
Gloria G. Ituwe (Chairperson)
Gloria has accompanied all previous projects and has been instrumental in their success. As a translator and organiser, she has supported all team members in many areas on site in Tanzania. She has been to Germany several times within the framework of different projects and was thus able to constantly exchange information with all those involved. She also lived in Germany for over a year and did her federal voluntary service with the Lutheran Church District in Lübeck-Lauenburg. She holds a diploma in business management and a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Due to her skills and her high level of social and intercultural competences, Gloria Ituwe is the chairperson of the NGO SUHRA in Tanzania.
Neema Jackson (Treasure)
Neema is well connected with companies on the ground through her work experience and works in different areas at national as well as international level. She has a bachelor’s degree in procurement and supply chain management and is the current treasurer of the NGO SUHRA-Tanzania.
Stephen Mayombo (Executive Secretary)
Stephen is a practising lawyer in Dar es Salaam and supports the entire SUHRA team in terms of legal and bureaucratic organisation. His extensive professional expertise and experience make him an important member of the local team. He holds a bachelor’s degree and a diploma in law.
German Members of SUHRA Tansania e. V.
Martin Strauss (Chairperson)
Martin is involved in the Basic Needs Project in the rural region of Mwanzas since 2015 and was able to play a major role in the success of the project through his professional and social skills. With his help on site, three wells were drilled and installed.
He also worked intensively on the planning of the Water for Malya project and was on site in Mwanza and Malya in 2017 to compile initial research results. He holds a master’s degree in civil engineering and currently works in the field of planning for drinking water supply, wastewater disposal and rainwater management in Germany.
Jascha Hödl (Deputy)
Jascha was in Mwanza and Malya in 2018 and 2019 as part of the Water for Malya project. Through his high level of commitment, the first construction phase of the project was initiated and implemented. During an intensive performance period, he was significantly involved in the success of the project on site. In 2021, he travelled to Mwanza again to gain knowledge within the rural region for another urban water management project. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, currently works in the laboratory for urban hygiene and waste management and is studying in parallel to obtain his master’s degree in water engineering.
Matthias Grottker (Treasure)
Matthias is Professor of Urban Wastewater and Waste Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Lübeck. He was one of the team members of the partnership between the church parish of Igoma (Mwanza, Tanzania, Diocese of East of Lake Victoria) and the Luther Melanchthon Church Parish in Lübeck, which was established in 1989. He initiated several charitable projects in Tanzania, improving the basic needs on urban hygiene in rural areas of Mwanza region. As part of his work as a professor, he motivated students to get involved in projects in the rural areas of Mwanza and to work on scientific projects in the WASH sector. Through him several students stayed in Tanzania and intensified their intercultural and interdisciplinary abilities. The Basic Needs projects of 2011 and 2015, as well as the Water for Malya project, 2017-2019, are mainly based on his commitment and could be led to success due to his help and professional expertise.
Ove L. Speil
Ove first went to Mbeya (Tanzania) in 2013 as part of his voluntary social pedagogical work, helping the local communities. Through many private contacts within Tanzania, he travelled regularly to the country and thus learned Kiswahili, the national language, which he now speaks fluently. For the Water for Malya project, he worked as a translator and organiser on site in 2018 and 2019. In addition, he was able to optimally accompany the planning and implementation of the project due to his professional competences and his high level of intercultural knowledge and was significantly involved in the success of the project.
Marleen Klagge
Marleen travelled to Mwanza for the first time in 2009 and researched basic needs in the field of sanitation in the region of Mwanza using the example of the suburban district of Igoma and three suburban villages for her Master’s thesis. In 2011, she accompanied the Basic Needs project team and acted as an advisor in the field. She has a Master’s degree in civil engineering and is currently working as a project manager in the field of planning for drinking water supply, wastewater disposal and stormwater management in Germany.
Torben Klagge
Torben is an IT specialist and supports the SUHRA team mainly in technical and digital tasks. He holds a Master’s degree in IT security as well as a diploma in electronics and telecommunications and can optimally complement the work within the project through his many years of experience and international affinity.
Sebastian Schlauss
Sebastian was in Mbulu (Tanzania) for the first time in 2007 as part of an internship and was able to analyse the drinking water supply and developed approaches for treatment and supply on site. During the Basic Needs Project in 2011, he supported the team with his professional and intercultural skills in Lübeck and on site in Mwanza. In 2015, he was one of the initiators of the continuation of the Basic Needs Project in the rural region of Mwanza and helped with the implementation on site, especially the construction of the deep water wells in the villages. The Water for Malya project, which was implemented between 2017 and 2019, is based on his work and commitment. He holds a diploma in environmental engineering and a master’s degree in environmental and process engineering with a focus on renewable energy systems..
Jan Osten
Jan travelled to Mwanza for the first time in 2011 and was intensively involved in the Basic Needs project. As part of his work in the field, he was able to collect data in the field and then worked on his bachelor’s thesis on the topic of “Improve water supply in the rural region of Mwanza”. In 2018 as well as 2019, he worked for the Water for Malya project in Mwanza and Malya in the field and was able to lead the planning and implementation to success significantly through his technical as well as social skills. He holds a master’s degree in civil engineering and currently works as a coordinator and lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Lübeck.
